The following is a brief history of Dr George Hadden
George Hadden was born into a Methodist family in Wexford in 1882. After attending
the Tate School in Wexford, and Wesley College in Dublin, he qualified as a medical
doctor at Edinburgh University in 1905 (where he also sang in the College choir). He
then spent thirty years doing medical work in China and Russia as well as travelling
in Africa. His wife Helen Vickers was also a medical doctor and worked with him in
China. They 'retired' to Wexford in 1938 and Dr. George then became very actively
involved in the study of the history and archeology of his native town and country.
As well as founding the Wexfod Male Voice Choir in 1941 and The Old Wexford
Society (Wexford Historical Society) in 1944, he was an active member of the national
Council of An Oige, an Alderman of Wexford Corporation and ultimately a Freeman
of the Borough.Dr. Hadden was quite an eccentric looking figure who can still be
recalled striding along the streets of Wexford with his long white hair, beard and
staff. He was a most sociable and enthusiastic man, and was said to "know the whole
town by name". He wrote and lectured on our heritage up until his death in 1973
aged 91 years.
